Greenwood's Eaton wins Class 3A boys' cross country meet

How's this for family domination?

Greenwood senior Ryan Eaton successfully defended his Class 3A title in Saturday's State Cross Country Meet, and he did so with the day's fastest time on a new course at the Kentucky Horse Park.

The record at the former site, the Horse Park campgrounds, was set by Eaton's brother Michael in 2005.

"I like it, actually," said Ryan Eaton, who toured 5,000 meters of rolling terrain in 15 minutes, 54.36 seconds. "It seems to go by really fast."

Runners benefited from mild weather, a day that began in the mid-50's for A and neared 70 for the 3A race.

"I love this weather," said Franklin County senior Robert Sandlin, the 2A winner. "This is what I wish it had been all year."

Class A: Walton Verona junior Trevin Peterson and Lexington Christian senior Will Mullett ran stride for stride through a 5:00 mile and 10:27 2-mile. About halfway through the third mile, the race was Peterson's.

"I felt good till the 2-mile mark," said Mullett, a senior. "I dodged a step so I wouldn't step on the back of Trevin's ankle, and I kind of took a false step there and landed sideways on my ankle."

Mullett ran through the pain but never recovered.

Peterson quickly recognized the situation as Mullett "said something."

Peterson, a junior, didn't alter his plan, though: "Just go as hard as I can, then go faster at the end."

He had his own worries.

"I think I've got strep and an ear infection," he said.

Nevertheless, he said, he felt fresh before the race.

Peterson finished in 16:18.49. Mullett took fourth in 16:35.79, passed in the homestretch by Bardstown's Adam Kahleifeh and Louisville Holy Cross's Jacob Thomson. Burgin freshman Alex Beckerson was fifth.

Defending champion James Maglasang of St. Mary finished seventh.

St. Henry, winning an eighth title in a row, edged Owensboro Catholic 97-111. Armand Frigo led the Crusaders, placing 11th.

Class 2A: Sandlin was in control start to finish.

He led by five seconds with a 5:00 mile and widened the gap to 18 seconds with a 5:22 second mile.

He won in 16:22.73.

"I knew my competition, and I knew that most of the year I'd been able to beat guys in 2A," said Sandlin, who placed eighth last year. "So I was pretty confident coming in. I just wanted to get out fast and avoid the sprint at the end."

Calloway County's Ryan Thurman edged Ashland Blazer's Jon Renneker for second in 16:54.30.

Jason Berry, who placed eighth, carried South Oldham to team honors with 81 points. Covington Catholic scored 90, and 2008 winner North Oldham had 95.

Class 3A: Eaton paced the field with a 4:55 mile and a 5:11 second mile.

Trinity's Jake Wildenmann and Shelby County's Stacy Eden were just a step behind at the 2-mile.

"I hadn't been beat by a Kentucky runner this year, so (I thought) I'd just lead from a little bit before the mile, push it from there," Eaton said. "I was feeling a little fatigued. ... They held on a little longer than I had hoped for. After the 2-mile, I just had to put the hammer down and push through it, and it hurt."

Eaton surged on a downhill at about 21/4 miles.

"That's where I stopped hearing footsteps," he said. "But I kept hearing people still cheering for them so I thought they might be close. So I just kept moving."

After Eaton came Wildenmann in 16:03.48. Daviess County's Evan Ehrenheim sprinted past Eden in the last quarter-mile to finish third.

St. Xavier, with five runners in the top 20 and all seven in the top 30, took its 17th team prize with 70 points. Defending champion Daviess County netted 148.
