Lexington Catholic senior Samantha Maddox will try to defend her singles title at the KHSAA State Tennis Tournament this weekend.
The tournament begins Thursday, with the girls playing at UK's Boone/Downing Complex, and the boys at the Sayre Athletic Complex.
All matches Friday and Saturday will be at UK.
Maddox is the top seed in girls' singles. Highlands' eighth-grader Meredith Laskey is the No. 2 seed.
Assumption's Maddie Phillips and Elizabeth Przystawski are the top seed in doubles, followed by Lone Oak's Dakota Durrett and Elizabeth Skinner.
The team semifinals will match Lone Oak against Russell, and Assumption against Notre Dame.
In the boys' competition, Greenwood junior Beck Pennington is the No. 1 seed in singles, followed by St. Xavier junior Alex Gornet, Louisville Christian senior Brett Johnson and Lexington Catholic junior Zack Lewis.
In doubles, Paducah Tilghman's Alek Rowton and Ethan Rowton are the top seed, followed by St. X's Sean Donohue and Joe Siami.
The team semifinals have Lone Oak going against St. X, and Model taking on Corbin.
St. X has won 12 of the last 15 boys' state titles.
Admission is free on Thursday but is $10 on Friday and Saturday. All-session armbands, good for both Friday and Saturday's action, are $15. Children less than 10 are admitted free.
