Girls' 42nd District soccer: Scott County 3, Henry Clay 0

GEORGETOWN — Taylor Borman scored two goals and assisted on another Wednesday as Scott County shut out Henry Clay 3-0 to win the girls' 42nd District Tournament title at Georgetown College.

The third-ranked Cardinals became district champions for the first time.

"We made history, so it's a great feeling," Borman said. "We beat them once (4-3 on Aug. 27), so it would be disappointing if we didn't get them this time."

Borman cleaned up a rebound for the only goal of the first half, with 8:51 to play.

Her crossing pass to Brittany Cline accounted for a clinching goal with 14:51 left, and Borman put the icing on with 3:09 to play.

"I thought we played really well. We had a couple different breakdowns that we need to fix and we'll get that done in practice," said Andrea "Bug" Brown, coach of the Cardinals (18-3). "I'm very proud of our girls because they made history ... so we just want to thank God for the ability to be able to do that, then bring it through without any major injuries. And we're looking forward to regions."

Both Scott and 15th-ranked Henry Clay (7-6-3) advance to the 11th Region tournament.

"We played well but Scott County played a lot better, and they were the better team tonight," Blue Devils Coach Mebit Aragaw said. "Especially defensively, they just dominated. We had our chances but they were the better team. I just want to congratulate them, winning it for the first time."

Unofficially, the Cardinals outshot the Devils 21-3 and had a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks. Henry Clay goalkeeper Ally Barfield kept things close by making 12 saves, while Michelle Washburn needed only two saves for the shutout.

How far can the Cardinals go?

"This team, honestly, can go to State if we play with heart," Brown said. "We've got to play with heart, got to have that edge, you've got to play with intensity from here on out."

"Our goal is to get all the way to State, and I think we can do it," Borman added. "I mean, we're ranked third in the state. ... There's no reason why we can't."
