High school boys' golf: West Jessamine swinging for repeat at State

West Jessamine has experience on its side as it shoots for a repeat title in the Leachman/KHSAA State Golf Championship at Bowling Green Country Club this week.

The Colts are led by senior Fred Allen Meyer and junior Connor Haas. Meyer, who won the individual state title last year, is playing in his seventh state tournament. Haas, who tied for ninth last year, is playing in his sixth.

"Those two guys have 13 years experience between them competing at a high level for a contending team," West Jessamine Coach Adam Young said. "That should make a difference."

The Colts also return juniors Byron Speach and Austen Swentzel, who were top 25 finishers last year. The fifth man is senior Landon Adkins.

West Jessamine and St. Xavier are considered the teams to beat in the 36-hole competition Tuesday and Wednesday. St. X is led by senior Brendon Doyle and sophomore Michael Sass. The Tigers have won 18 state titles, the last in 2009.

Young thinks Ryle, McCracken County, Covington Catholic and Scott County are also capable of making a run at the championship.

Scott County is led by region champ Billy Tom Sargent, along with Corey DeRossett, Corey Damron, Cooper Bergman and Harrison Hoskins.

Clark County won its first region title in 12 years, with Blake Cartwright leading the way. Matthew and Jacob Omohundro, Hunter Rowe and Jett Clarke will also compete for the Cardinals.

Clay County junior Tyler "Chip" McDaniel is among those expected to battle for medalist honors. He won the State Amateur and national Junior PGA Championship this summer. He tied for fifth in the state last year.

Jacob Cook of Franklin County, Zach Miller of Madison Central and Harrison Clarke of Paul Laurence Dunbar qualified for the state tourney as individuals.
