Volleyball: Dunbar beats Owensboro Catholic to reach state semifinals

LOUISVILLE — The Paul Laurence Dunbar volleyball team advanced to the KHSAA State Tournament semifinals with a 25-23, 25-18, 25-20 win over Owensboro Catholic Saturday afternoon at Valley High School.

Awaiting the seventh-ranked Bulldogs at 7 tonight will be No. 3 Notre Dame, which posted a 25-22, 27-25, 20-25, 25-23 win over Sacred Heart to open the morning session.

The Bulldogs were once again led by its outstanding combo of Olivia Canales and Leah Edmond. The 6-foot-1 Edmond, a junior who’s committed to UK, had 17 kills and 12 digs. Canales, a 6-foot-1 senior headed to TCU, had 12 kills and senior middle hitter Rachel Brown added 10. Setter Mary Martin had 43 assists.
