Basketball: Toyota Classic gets underway Wednesday

The Toyota Classic gets underway at Scott County beginning Wednesday. The event features an eight-team boys’ tournament, a four-team girls’ round-robin and a matchup of two prep schools in addition to several youth and freshmen games.

The boys’ tournament starts at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday with a first-round meeting between Casey County and Holmes. Host Scott County, ranked fifth in the latest Cantrall Ratings, meets Knox Central at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The Cardinals have won their home event two straight seasons and three out of the last four.

Lafayette, tied for fifth in the rankings, gets Lake Brantley (Fla.) at 7 p.m. Thursday while No. 22 Wayne County gets Saunders (N.Y.) in the first round at 8:30 p.m. Thursday. John Mooney, Lake Brantley’s leading scorer (24.4 ppg) and rebounds (12 rpg), has signed with Notre Dame. Derrick Felder, a Saunders senior, has been offered by Bryant.

Participating in the girls’ round-robin are No. 8 Franklin County, No. 14 Ryle, Clay County and host Scott County, ranked No. 22.

Sound Doctrine (Ga.) and Hargrave Military Academy (Va.) will square off at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Former Perry County Central star Braxton Beverly transferred to Hargrave before the season. Former West Jessamine standout Brooks Ely also plays for Hargrave.
