Another year, another boys’ team tennis title that goes back to Louisville.
St. Xavier defeated Henry Clay, 3-0, for its eighth straight title at the Republic Bank/KHSAA State Tennis Team Championships. That’s a new state record; the Tigers surpassed their own mark set when they won seven straight from 1996-2002.
It was St. Xavier’s 18th title in 21 years and 25th overall. Six other schools — Ballard, Henderson County, Manual, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Sayre and Trinity — have combined for the other 10 since the team competition began in 1982.
St. Xavier hasn’t given up a point since the team competition went to a bracketed tournament format in 2011. Henry Clay was in good position to take a doubles point but all three singles matches finished before the Blue Devils could score on Sunday.

As Henry Clay’s players were presented with their runner-up trophy, several exclaimed “Public school champions!” with their dynastic opponents standing on the adjacent court.
“We do feel like a lot of times we’re playing for second place,” Henry Clay Coach John Herring said. “ ... This is a great accomplishment for this team. Second is where we wanna get to. Obviously we’d love to get to first but it’s a big task to get there.”
McCracken County went 3-0 against Sacred Heart in the girls’ finals. The Valkyries started the match down 1-0 because four of its players were seniors who went back to Louisville for their graduation ceremony Sunday.
Henry Clay’s girls fell to Corbin in the second round of the state tournament on Saturday.
The boys’ and girls’ individual tournaments (singles and doubles) begin Thursday at various sites around Lexington. The finals are scheduled for Saturday.
