The KHSAA Board of Control approved the state finals dates and times for the Russell Athletic/KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl during its first meeting of the 2016-17 season, held Tuesday and Wednesday.

Kentucky’s six football championship games will be played at Houchens Industries/L.T. Smith Stadium at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green. The schedule is (all times eastern):

Friday, Dec 2: Class A finals 2 p.m.; Class 4A finals 6 p.m.

Saturday, Dec. 3: Class 3A finals 2 p.m.; Class 6A finals 6 p.m.

Sunday, Dec. 4: Class 2A finals 2 p.m.; Class 5A finals 6 p.m.

The KHSAA in May approved a proposal to play two games each day over three days. Previously, three finals were played on Friday followed by three more on Saturday.

Last season, the six finals were played over the course of four days due to WKU hosting the Conference-USA football championship. The Class A finals between Pikeville and Beechwood were held on Thursday night. No games were played Friday. Two finals — Class 6A and 5A — were played starting later in the evening on Saturday following the C-USA game with the remaining three finals played on Sunday.

Among other items from its meeting, the KHSAA approved dates and sites for the 2016 State Field Hockey Tournament and granted provisional membership to Cornerstone Christian in London.
