The quarterfinals of the Whitaker Bank/KHSAA Baseball State Tournament get underway Saturday at Whitaker Bank Ballpark in Lexington.
Muhlenberg County and Simon Kenton meet at 11 a.m. to kick off the day’s action. Muhlenberg County, in the state tournament for the first time in school history, defeated Rowan County, 4-3 in nine innings, on Thursday. Simon Kenton beat Clark County, 3-1, on Thursday.
Marion County and Knox Central, both also first-time participants at state, won their debuts and one of them is guaranteed a spot in next week’s final four. They take on one another at 1:30 p.m.
The nightcap opens with what could be a thriller. McCracken County, ranked second in the state, knocked off No. 1 Trinity, 1-0, on Friday and gets No. 3 Scott County in the quarterfinals at 6 p.m. The Cardinals for the second year in a row defeated Caldwell County in the opening round, this time handling the Tigers, 4-0.
Highlands, ranked 22nd, defeated No. 5 Johnson Central, 3-1, in the final first-round game on Friday and will close out the quarterfinals with a matchup against No. 4 Pleasure Ridge Park scheduled to start at 8:30 p.m. PRP advanced earlier on Friday with a 4-3 win over Franklin-Simpson.
The state semifinals are scheduled for 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Friday at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. The state championship game will start at 1 p.m. Saturday.
