Kentucky’s high school baseball state tourney has a home for 2019. What about softball?

Whitaker Bank Ballpark will again host the Kentucky high school state baseball tournament in 2019.

The KHSAA Board of Control approved Whitaker Bank Ballpark — home of the Lexington Legends — as the state baseball tournament host site on Wednesday. The venue’s contract with the KHSAA expired after the 2018 tournament but the parties were expected to continue their agreement into next year.

KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett during the board meeting noted the opening of Kentucky Proud Park, the University of Kentucky’s new baseball stadium. That site in the future could be considered for the state baseball tournament but it was not desirable to the KHSAA to enter into an agreement with a venue that has not yet completed its first year of operation.

The selection of a site for the state softball tournament — which will move from its previous site, Jack C. Fisher Park in Owensboro — was on Wednesday’s agenda but tabled until the next board of control meeting on Jan. 16. Both UK and the University of Louisville have expressed interest in hosting.

Sites were selected for the 2019 and 2020 KHSAA State Swimming and Diving Championships. U of L’s Ralph R. Wright Natatorium will host the 2019 event while the 2020 championships will be held at the University of Kentucky’s Lancaster Aquatic Center.
