The Forcht Bank State Baseball Tournament is still three weeks away, but the 43rd District Tournament, which begins Monday, might be even more competitive.
All five teams in the 43rd are in the top 25, led by No. 1 and defending state champion Lexington Catholic.
The district also has No. 6 Lexington Christian, No. 9 Tates Creek, No. 13 Lafayette and No. 24 Paul Dunbar.
The 43rd has produced five of the last seven state champions.
The district tournament at LCA opens with a showdown between Lexington Catholic and Tates Creek. They haven't met since last year's district semifinals when the Knights won 5-3.
Monday's game probably will feature the same two starting pitchers — Lexington Catholic junior Taylor Martin going against Commodores senior Trevor Gott.
The Lexington Catholic-Tates Creek winner advances to the semifinals where it will likely see Lafayette ace Logan Shaftner.
LCA and Dunbar will meet in the other semifinal game.
In the 42nd District, host Henry Clay is considered the favorite. Bryan Station is hoping to duplicate last year's success when it got hot in the playoffs and came close to upsetting Lexington Catholic in the region finals.
District winners and runners-up move on to the 11th Region tournament at Franklin County next week.
