Cardinals earn some rest

Scott County's offense was in full force Monday night, shooting 59 percent from the field on its way to a 111-41 victory over Sayre.

But Coach Billy Hicks said his defense will be the key if the No. 1 Cardinals are going to make their way through the post-season and win their second Sweet Sixteen in three years.

"Your defense has really got to be tough. You've got to play defense," said Hicks, whose team forced 29 turnovers. "I thought we had a good mixture tonight of defense and offense, and we played hard."

The Cardinals, who never trailed in the game, jumped out to an early 22-3 lead in the first quarter and led by 29 at the half.

Richie Phares scored 16 points, and Ge-Lawn Guyn and Austin Flannery each had 15 for Scott County, which had six players score in double figures.

Tebo Barnett led Sayre with 13 points and six rebounds.

Scott County pulled its starters with a 74-23 lead and 4:23 to go in the third quarter. The Cardinals' reserves played the rest of the way.

"You don't want to get anybody hurt in a tournament game if you've got a big lead. We were able to get our players out of there and get them some rest," Hicks said.

Guard Tamron Manning scored four points and had four assists in his first game back since injuring his left ankle against Lexington Catholic on Feb. 14.

"He got back pretty good. ... I thought he was a little bit out of sync," Hicks said of the 6-foot-3 freshman. "But it was good to see him get back out there again. I think his ankle's fine."

Scott County will advance to the 11th Region Tournament after playing the winner of Bryan Station and Henry Clay in Thursday's district finals. Even after Monday night's victory, Hicks says his team has "lots of things" to work on.

"Henry Clay and Bryan Station, they're really outstanding teams. We gotta get ready to play both of them. Either one of them is going to be really tough."
