Top-rated Elizabethtown wins, will face No. 3 team

The No. 1 team in Dave Cantrall's Rating the State opened the Girls' 5th Region Tournament on Monday night with a 55-40 victory over Hart County.

Elizabethtown's reward? A second-round matchup with No. 3 Nelson County — and the region's host.

Senior center Alex Jones scored a game-high 22 points for Elizabethtown (28-2), which hasn't lost since Jan. 16.

The Panthers will play Nelson County in the semifinals Friday night. The winner advances to the region finals on Saturday for a chance at the Sweet Sixteen.

No. 3 Nelson County 74, Adair County 46 (5th Region): Host Nelson County (27-5) trailed 16-13 after one quarter but answered with a 19-6 run before halftime and coasted into the region semifinals.

Junior center Samantha Drake, a UK commitment, scored 28 for Nelson County, which has won 13 in a row.

Assumption 68, No. 13 Mercy 61 (7th Region): Mercy (19-8) fell behind by 16 points in the second half and couldn't avoid the first-round upset at Bellarmine.

Assumption (15-12), which lost to Mercy 61-50 in their first meeting, had a 44-28 rebounding advantage, led by Clare Delahanty (13) and Amy Brutscher (11).

South Oldham 30, Walton-Verona 27 (8th Region): Host South Oldham (18-11) rallied to win despite scoring eight points in the first half and shooting 1-for-16 on three-pointers. But its full-court press was responsible for Walton-Verona's nine second-half points.

Newport Catholic 50, Holmes 39 (9th Region): Newport Catholic (23-8) held Holmes to nine points in the first half and finished with just four turnovers to win the first-round game at Northern Kentucky University.

Junior guard Courtney Sandfoss had 25 points, six rebounds and three steals for Newport Catholic. Senior forward Kimber Schultz added 10 points and 10 rebounds.

St. Henry 53, Ryle 42 (9th Region): Sophomore forward Abby Janszen had 19 points and nine rebounds to lead St. Henry (19-9) to the first-round win at NKU.

Freshman guard Ashley Cheesman scored 15 for Ryle (19-10).

Campbell County 73, Deming 33 (10th Region): Senior guard Katie Kitchen scored 28 points, and Campbell County (21-6) rolled to the first-round victory at Harrison County.

Deming (14-15) was held to single digits in every quarter.

South Laurel 40, North Laurel 35 (13th Region): South Laurel (19-9) closed the game on a 17-6 run to reach the region semifinals at Bell County.

Morgan Johnson had 16 points for South Laurel, and Kendra Davidson added eight.

Harlan County 67, Pine-ville 38 (13th Region): Harlan County (20-9) opened the second half with a 15-2 burst and pulled away in the first-round game at Bell County.

Guard Johnnie Parker led Harlan County with 17 points. Pineville guard Chelsey Smith led all scorers with 21.

Phelps 70, Allen Central 50 (15th Region): Phelps (19-5) overcame Megan Jones' five three-pointers to win the first-round game at the Eastern Kentucky Expo Center in Pikeville. Jones, who scored 17 points, hit four threes in the fourth quarter.

Senior forward Kaitlyn Riley had 13 points and 11 rebounds for Phelps.

Paintsville 51, Shelby Valley 48 (15th): Paintsville weathered a 21-point Shelby Valley fourth quarter to advance to the region semifinals at the Eastern Kentucky Expo Center.

Brittani Chaffins scored 18 points for the winners. Laura Perkins had 17 for Shelby Valley (19-9), which lost its last two games.
