Thursday's high school basketball highlights

Boys

■ Ian Chiles recorded a double-double and No. 11 Ballard held on to an early double-digit lead to spoil second-ranked Scott County's season opener with an 84-81 win Thursday in Louisville. Chiles had 21 points and 11 rebounds and the host Bruins opened up a 26-13 lead after one quarter. Ge-Lawn Guyn was one of five Cardinals scoring in double figures with 22 points. Chad Jackson added 20 points and former Kentucky recruit and Akron signee Dakotah Euton chipped in with 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Cardinals had won their last 20 regular-season games.The Bruins were two days removed from a 79-47 season-opening victory at No. 23 Bryan Station.

■ Freshman guard Omar Prewitt scored 28 points to lead Montgomery County to a 78-62 victory at Nicholas County.

■ Junior guard Nathan Vaughn's 12 points led a balanced Berea attack in a 62-52 victory over visiting Frankfort. Junior post player Evan Wright had a game-high 15 points for the Panthers.

Girls

■ Sophomore Maddy Mitchell scored a game-high 17 points to help host Sayre defeat Model 56-29. Senior Chanel Minnifield chipped in with 12 points and junior Bea Cameron had 10 points for the Lady Spartans, who pulled away from the Lady Patriots with a 23-7 second quarter.

■ Leah VanHoose tallied 16 points and 13 rebounds to lead Paintsville to a 67-55 win over visiting Pineville.

■ Junior forward Brooke Coleman scored a game-high 22 points to send Shelby Valley to a 65-55 home win over South Floyd.
