2000 Mr. Basketball to coach Woodford Co. boys

Scott Hundley, Kentucky's Mr. Basketball in 2000, is the new boys' basketball coach at Woodford County.

This will be Hundley's first head coaching job. He succeeds Gene Kirk, who came out of retirement to coach the Yellowjackets for one season.

"I'm extremely excited," said Hundley, 28. "It's a goal I set for myself and it's great to get this opportunity."

Hundley has been an assistant at Montgomery County the last three years. Before that he was on Billy Hicks' staff at Scott County.

Hundley played college ball at Vanderbilt.

Montgomery County Coach Keith Griesser said he couldn't have given Woodford County a stronger recommendation on Hundley.

"His passion is high, and his knowledge of the game is great," Griesser said.

It will be a homecoming of sorts for Hundley's wife Torie, who is from Midway. Hundley said the couple bought a lot in Midway on Thursday. Hundley knows the challenges he'll face coaching in the 11th Region.

"I'm really familiar with it since I've been around it my whole life," he said. "I know what I'm coming into."
