Republic Bank Classic: Bowling Green, LexCath move on to quarterfinals

Bowling Green star Chane Behanan didn't do anything spectacular, but he didn't have to as his supporting cast carried its share of the load in a 65-42 victory over Sheldon Clark in the Republic Bank Holiday Classic at Lexington Catholic on Monday night.

The 6-foot-7 Behanan, rated one of the nation's top players and a University of Louisville signee, had 19 points, eight rebounds, five assists and five steals. He looked more intent on setting up his teammates than scoring himself.

"It was pretty physical around the rim and (Sheldon Clark) was rolling two or three guys at Chane inside, so he became more of a passer tonight than a scorer," Purples Coach D.G. Sherrill said. "He created several opportunities for his teammates."

Scooter Hollis had 11 points and Austin Disney added 10 for Bowling Green.

The Purples started pulling away late in the third quarter when Behanan was taking a breather on the bench. They turned a 37-29 lead into a 47-31 cushion, with Disney and Hollis sparking the run with three-pointers.

Sheldon Clark was led by Chase Kirk's 18 points. Justin Johnson had eight points and 17 rebounds.

Lexington Catholic 82, Betsy Layne 50: Showing no signs of jet lag after returning from Hawaii a few days ago, the host Knights jumped to a big lead early and rolled past Betsy Layne.

Taylor Martin had an efficient night — 21 points, seven steals and five rebounds in 15 minutes of play — to lead Lexington Catholic.

Scott Schuette had 12 points and five assists, and Craig Floyd added 11 points and five rebounds.

The Knights had 24 assists and forced Betsy Layne into 28 turnovers.

Nathan Martin's 21 points led Betsy Layne.

Fayette County (Ga.) 83, Warren Central 45: Warren Central's Christmas wish might be to not play any more teams from out of state.

Coming into the Holiday Classic, the Dragons' three losses were to opponents from Texas, Tennessee and California. Then came the beat-down by the Tigers from Georgia on Monday.

Maurice Williams led Fayette County with 24 points, including 5-for-7 on threes. Adam Smith, who's headed to UNC-Wilmington, had 19 points and four assists for the Tigers, who shot 54 percent.

Fayette County, rated No. 2 in Class 4A in Georgia, is coached by former Woodford County and Transylvania star Andre Flynn.

Warren Central, which was rated No. 6 in the pre-season, was led by WKU signee George Fant's 19 points and 12 rebounds. Fant was 5-for-17 from the field and 9-for-12 from the free-throw line.

Covington Catholic 65, University Heights 53: Jake Thelen's 29 points and seven rebounds keyed the Colonels' victory.

"One of his best games of the year," Coach Mike Listerman said of his 6-7 senior. "His teammates delivered the ball at the right time in the right position, and Jake's got a great touch."

CovCath's teamwork was reflected in its 24 assists and 61 percent shooting.

Brett Riedinger had 11 points and Alex Connelly had 10 for the Colonels. Connor Maschinot added five points and seven assists.

UHA was led by Kquan McNease's 18 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and three steals. Matt McGowan had 15 points.
