High school basketball highlights: Dec. 30

Boys

■ Marcellus Barksdale had 27 points, eight rebounds and four steals, and Ryan Fucci added 14 points and seven boards, and Tates Creek held on to beat host Montgomery County 60-50 in the semifinals of the Gateway Classic.

The Commodores, ranked No. 7 in the Herald-Leader's pre-season coaches' poll, shot 24-for-61 from the field but outscored the Indians 20-12 in the paint. They'll face Madison Central in the finals Thursday.

■ Dominique Hawkins scored 23 points, and Madison Central rallied past Mason County 56-50 in the fourth quarter in the semifinals of the Gateway Classic at Montgomery County. The Indians were down eight at halftime and three after the third quarter, but they outscored the Royals 25-16 in the fourth. Madison Central will take on Tates Creek in the finals on Thursday.

Treg Setty and Tyler Black each scored 20 points to lead Mason County. Black added 11 rebounds.

■ Jake Thelen had 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead Covington Catholic past Henry Clay 67-57 in the consolation bracket of the Republic Bank Classic at Lexington Catholic.

Brandon Nichols led the Blue Devils with 12 points, and Jordan Green added 11 off the bench.

■ Ray Brewer had 17 points and eight rebounds, and fellow sophomore Mike Smith added 14 points to lead host Sayre to a 62-49 victory over Harlan County in the semifinals of the Sayre Holiday Classic.

■ Junior Jay Johnson scored 32 points, and Woodford County cruised past host Powell County 78-43 in the Red River Classic championship game.

Adair County's Trey Grider hit back-to-back three-pointers in the final 17 seconds of regulation, and Matt Fudge scored all of the Indians' overtime points for a 59-54 win over Greenup County in the consolation bracket of the Citizens Bank/Campbellsville University Classic. Fudge, a 5-foot-6 freshman, led Adair County with 19 points, and Grider scored 16.

Girls

■ Senior center Amber Crumbie had 13 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and two blocks to lead Bryan Station's 65-38 rout of Bardstown in the semifinals of the Candy Cane Classic at South Laurel. Sophomore Serena Sandusky added 14 points, eight rebounds, six assists and four steals for the Lady Defenders, who will take on Harlan County in the finals on Thursday.

■ Octavia Wilson scored 17 points, and Alex Botkin added 12 points and 13 rebounds as Lexington Catholic rolled to a 72-42 victory over Boyle County in the consolation bracket of the Titan Christmas Clash at Mercer County.

The Lady Knights (4-7), ranked 22nd in the Herald-Leader's pre-season coaches' poll, outscored the Lady Rebels 23-4 in the third quarter to take control.

■ Oney Harrison led four players in double figures with 19 points, and Tates Creek beat Nelson County 57-52 in the consolation bracket of the Titan Christmas Clash at Mercer County.

■ Maddie Mitchell scored 20 points to lead Sayre past Valley 52-35 in the semifinals of the Kentucky Country Day Holiday Tournament.

■ Shomari Kendrick led a balanced attack for Lafayette with 15 points, and the Lady Generals edged Ohio County 65-62 in the second round of the Paris-Bourbon County Classic. Eight players scored for Lafayette.
