High school basketball highlights: Jan. 3


Lexington Catholic's Alex Botkin had game highs in scoring (21) and rebounding (18), but it wasn't enough in a 69-55 home loss to Sacred Heart, ranked 11th in Dave Cantrall's Rating the State.

Sacred Heart scored 23 points off 17 turnovers by the 25th-ranked Lady Knights, who also got 13 points and four assists from Octavia Wilson and 10 points and eight rebounds from Emily Johns.

Monica McGreal scored a team-high 18 points for Sacred Heart, and Morgan Clemons had 13 points, nine rebounds, four assists, four blocks and three steals. Maddie Peabody tacked on 12 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Sacred Heart, which never led by less than 10 in the fourth quarter, shot 49.2 percent from the field while holding Lexington Catholic to 38 percent.

The Valkyries edged the Lady Knights on the boards 34-33, but they scored 50 points in the paint versus 28 by Catholic.

■ No. 15 Clay County opened on a 21-11 run, then went on to edge visiting Scott County 71-70. Kayla Smith scored a game-high 25 points for the Lady Tigers, and Whitney Belle Jackson added 15 points and 11 rebounds. Kristen Stainback led the No. 10 Cardinals with 20 points.

■ Gabby Bowie had eight points and eight rebounds in Sayre's 26-20 win against visiting West Jessamine. The teams combined to shoot 25.7 percent from the field, including 0-for-13 from three-point range.

Maddie Mitchell added seven points and seven rebounds for the Lady Spartans.

Clark County opened on an 18-7 run and went on to defeat visiting Mason County 63-39. Senior guard Shamy Williams scored 20 points for the Lady Cardinals.

■ Rianna Gayheart went 8-for-13 from the field and 9-for-11 from the line, scoring 27 points to go with 10 steals in Owen County's 67-51 win against visiting Gallatin County.

■ Adair County got a double-double from McKenzie Martin — 12 points and 14 rebounds — in a 58-30 victory against visiting McCreary County Central. Chanley Otterson added three three-pointers and scored a game-high 16 points.

Mercer County went 12-for-27 from three-point range in a dominating 99-34 victory against visiting East Jessamine.

■ Junior guard Kara Taulbee scored 20 points for Walton-Verona in a 75-30 rout of host Trimble County.

■ Freshman guard Rachel Potter had 23 points and six assists in Pikeville's 65-52 defeat of visiting Prestonsburg.

■ Brooke Coleman scored 25 points and had five steals and host Shelby Valley cruised to a 64-36 victory against Johnson Central.


■ Senior forward Matthew Taylor scored 31 points to help Corbin defeat visiting Jellico (Tenn.) 74-59.

■ No. 24 Pulaski County (9-3) got 15 points from Kody Johnson in an 85-67 victory at Somerset.

■ Gavin Dunagan scored 18 points and Wayne County (12-1) defeated a travel team from Australia 77-59. Kyle and Ryan Hopper added 15 and 13 points, respectively.
