High school basketball highlights: Jan. 19

GIRLS

■ Louisville signee Sara Hammond scored 22 points and had 11 rebounds and six blocked shots to lead Rockcastle County, ranked second in Dave Cantrall's Rating the State, to a 65-41 victory against visiting Wayne County.

The Lady Rockets (16-1) also got nine points from fellow senior Angie Lawrence, who reached the 1,000-point mark for her career.

Kayla Bowlin scored 19 points for the Cardinals.

■ No. 24 Lexington Catholic (10-8) used a 20-6 advantage in the third quarter to erase a nine-point halftime deficit in a 59-53 victory against visiting Clark County (11-5).

Octavia Wilson scored 23 points and was 9-for-9 from the free-throw line for the Lady Knights. Emily Johns and Elizabeth Walton added 12 points apiece and Alex Botkin had six points, nine rebounds and three steals.

Clark County's Brittani Gay scored 23 points and had five rebounds, both team highs.

Franklin County junior Ashli Mayes had 29 points, nine rebounds and four steals in the Lady Flyers' 55-44 win at Tates Creek. Peyton Hisel led the Lady Commodores with 12 points.

■ Danay Fothergill, a Western Kentucky signee, scored 25 points to lead Southwestern (12-5) in a rout of visiting Russell County.

■ Eleisha Houston's free throw with 1.9 seconds gave Danville (12-4) a 53-52 home victory against Somerset in the 12th Region All "A" Classic. Kasey Young scored a game-high 23 points for the Lady Admirals. She also had five steals and five rebounds.

■ No. 14 Clay County got 23 points from Whitney Jackson in a 61-47 victory at Breathitt County.

■ Morgan Jett scored a game-high 19 points and Kosha Puente hit four free throws in the final minute to seal Fleming County's 62-53 victory at Paris. Morgan Crain had 11 points and 12 rebounds for Paris, and eighth-grader Asia Sims scored 15.

■ Eighth-grader Chelsey Ford had 10 points and 11 rebounds and Woodford County (15-2) led host Western Hills (6-9) by 17 at halftime before holding on for a 46-39 victory. Kendyl Vandergriff scored 19 for the Lady Wolverines.

■ Jenna Crittendon's 13 points and 10 rebounds helped No. 10 Ryle (11-3) get an 81-45 road win at Simon Kenton (10-4).

BOYS

Eastern senior forward Lyonell Gaines had 17 points and 11 rebounds in the top-ranked Eagles' 92-43 rout of visiting Atherton. Kameron Woods, who has committed to play at Butler, had four points to go with 10 blocked shots.

Wayne County (17-1) continued its strong start to the season with a 76-51 victory at Rockcastle County. Gavin Dunnagan scored 24 points to lead the Cardinals, and Josh McKinney also had 24 for the Rockets.

East Jessamine (11-4) overcame 11 Madison Southern three-pointers, 10 in the second half, in a 77-63 road victory. Cody Collins led the Jaguars with 19 points. Michael Rothemel scored 20 for the Eagles (8-8).

Woodford County and Western Hills were tied at 24 at halftime before the Yellowjackets prevailed 66-50 on the road. Jay Johnson (15 points and 13 rebounds) and Rodney Gross (18 and 10) both had double-doubles for Woodford.

■ No. 25 Ashland Blazer outscored Greenup County 38-10 in the second quarter and went on to win 80-54 at home. Cody Withrow led the Tomcats with 21 points.

Taylor County freshman Caleb Wigginton hit five of his six three-pointers in the first quarter and scored 24 points in a 75-35 rout of visiting Hart County. Kevin Webster added 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Cardinals.

■ Deshawn Douglas scored 18 points and hit all four of his free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter in Marion County's 55-48 defeat of visiting Adair County.

■ Nathan Martin scored his 1,000th career point in Betsy Layne's 59-31 win at Lawrence County. He had 11 in the game.

■ Treg Setty scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in Mason County's 67-52 home win against Simon Kenton.

■ Clay Cinnamon scored 25 points and Matthew Honchel had 18 points and 10 rebounds in Mercer County's 85-57 win against visiting Montgomery County. Aaron Lee added 11 points and 15 rebounds.

Buckhorn's Matt Day had 26 points and 11 rebounds in a 68-58 win against visiting Leslie County.
