High school basketball highlights: Jan. 4

Girls

Lexington Catholic, ranked seventh in Dave Cantrall's Rating the State, led by nine early in the fourth quarter but couldn't hold on in a 56-50 loss at No. 15 Sacred Heart. The Valkyries took the lead for good on a pair of free throws by DaiJai Ruffin with 52 seconds left.

Ruffin scored a game-high 16 points to go with seven rebounds. Raven Merriweather added 13 points, eight rebounds, five steals, three assists and three blocked shots for Sacred Heart.

Alex Botkin had 13 points and 17 rebounds for the Lady Knights. Octavia Wilson and Rachel Blake both scored 10 points.

■ Shelby McDonald hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to send Woodford County's game at Tates Creek to overtime, and her three-pointer with three minutes to go in the extra frame propelled the Lady Yellowjackets to a 72-66 victory. Hannah Morgan led Woodford County with 22 points and 12 rebounds, and her twin sister, Jessica, had 15 points and 12 rebounds. McDonald scored 15.

■ Whitney Hartledge hit a three-pointer with 72 seconds left in the third quarter that gave No. 5 Mercy the lead for good in a 72-61 victory at home against No. 17 Elizabethtown. Hartledge was 4-for-9 from three-point range and wound up with 20 points and four rebounds. Christine Roush led Mercy with 22 points.

Sayre senior forward Maddie Mitchell scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds in a 51-29 victory at West Jessamine. Mitchell was the fifth player, boys or girls, to score 1,000 points for the school.

■ Sophomore Eriel McKee came close to a triple-double with 23 points, 10 steals, eight rebounds and four assists in No. 20 Anderson County's 61-35 victory against Henry Clay. Areanna Porter scored 12 points for the visiting Lady Devils.

■ Jordin Fender scored 18 points in host Paul Laurence Dunbar's 51-37 win against Lafayette. Sarah Colley had 12 points and 18 rebounds for the Lady Generals.

■ Freshman guard Adison Corder scored 27 points to go with four assists, and host Southwestern defeated Monticello 60-45 for its 11th straight victory. It was Corder's third straight big game after totaling 51 against Paintsville and Shelby Valley.

Adair County senior Chanley Otterson grabbed a rebound off a missed free-throw attempt and scored at the buzzer to give the Lady Indians a 60-58 victory against visiting Greenup County. Adair County improved to 14-1.

■ Senior center Megan Pittman scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in Casey County's 43-31 victory at home against Taylor County.

Boys

Franklin County's Ryan Timmons, who picked off an inbounds pass and was fouled with 5.9 seconds left, hit one of two free-throw attempts to give the Flyers a 67-66 victory at Frankfort. Timmons finished with 27 points.

■ Barry Scudder-Davis' basket with 24 seconds left gave Berea a 57-56 victory against visiting Sayre. Scudder-Davis finished with 18 points, and Ben Miller had 15. The Spartans got 28 points and five rebounds from Reid Freeman.

Clark County senior forward Adam Fatkin had 25 points and 14 rebounds in the 12th-ranked Cardinals' 70-43 victory against visiting Bourbon County.

Bryan Station's Larry Morton went 12-for-13 at the line and scored 22 points in a 70-61 victory at home against Lafayette. Morton also had eight rebounds and four steals. Jalen Beckham added 13 points, six steals and four assists.

LaRue County scored 31 points off 28 forced turnovers and cruised to a 79-27 victory at Campbellsville. Kyle Sheeran led the Hawks with 19 points and three steals. Key Kody and Kelton Ford both added 12 points.

■ Nate McGovney hit a 10-foot fadeaway jumper at the buzzer to give Campbell County a 42-40 victory at Mason County. McGovney scored 21 points.
