High school basketball highlights, Jan. 13


Henry Clay, ranked 20th in Dave Cantrall's Rating the State, edged Paul Dunbar 63-53, holding the visitors to just four points in the second quarter and leading 29-15 at halftime. Dunbar's Mike Smith scored 29 points, more than half of his team's total. Sophomore Jordan Green led the winners, now 11-6, with 17 points. Christian Cunningham added 13 and Trey Grundy had 11 rebounds. Henry Clay hit 12 of 13 free throws and outshot Dunbar 44 percent to 33 percent.

■ Junior center Tony Campbell scored 21 points, pulled down 15 rebounds and blocked eight shots to lead Holmes past Covington Holy Cross 64-53. The winners also got 19 points and eight rebounds from Dontel Rice.

■ Richmond McAnallen hit the game-winning shot with three seconds left to lift Pikeville past Magoffin County 57-56 in a 15th Region All-A Classic game in Pikeville. Ethan Rowe led the winners with 23 points. The game was close all the way, including a 22-22 tie in a rapid-fire first quarter.

■ Senior guard Andrew Roberts got 13 points and 11 rebounds to lead Betsy Layne to its 10th win, a 47-36 victory over host Prestonsburg in an All-A Classic game.


Lexington Catholic's girls avenged the boys team's first loss ever to Lexington Christian earlier in the week by whipping the visiting Eagles 72-38. Seniors Bonnie Rhule and Alex Botkin led the way with 17 and 15 points. The winners got 35 points off Lexington Christian's 23 turnovers and won the rebounding battle 35-23.

■ Host Perry County Central, No. 4 in the state, ran its record to 16-0 win a 58-49 win over Clay County. Kendall Noble led the way with 17 points, 10 steals and seven assists.
