High school basketball highlights: Jan. 18


■ Junior Charles Sweat-Washington scored 21 points to lead visiting Lafayette (7-10) past Tates Creek 67-46. The winners pulled away with a 27-11 bulge in the fourth quarter. Tates Creek (9-9) got 19 points from Darius Gibson.

■ After a big first half, host Lexington Christian (12-6) held off Sayre (3-11) 67-60 in an All-A Classic game. Guard Taylor Blair led the winners with 22 points, while center Ray Brewer got 27 points and 14 rebounds for Sayre. Lexington Christian outshot Sayre 50 percent to 37 percent and led 31-20 at halftime.

Magoffin County dominated overtime to beat host Powell County 69-64. Powell's Trey Marcum, who led all scorers with 25 points, hit a three-pointer from 30 feet in the final seconds to send the game into overtime. Magoffin led 53-46 in regulation when a foul and a technical sent Powell players to the line, where they made all four shots. Then Ryan Goodwin hit a layup to bring Powell within one. Nathan Howard hit two free throws to restore Magoffin's lead to three before Marcum hit the long one to tie it. Magoffin's Cory Pitts got 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Trinity, ranked first in the state in Dave Cantrall's Rating the State, took control early and rolled over Franklin County 76-35. Playing at home for only the second time this season, Trinity had 14 players score. The Shamrocks, who have won 11 in a row, are 14-0 against Kentucky teams, winning all state games by at least 13 points. A 26-2 run in the first half put the game away early.

■ Dontel Rice scored 24 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead host Covington Holmes past West Jessamine 62-54. Chase Fain led the Colts with 11 points and seven rebounds. The winners committed only nine fouls in the game and turned the ball over only six times.

■ Jansen Flood put back a rebound with seven seconds left to lift Elizabethown past visiting John Hardin 61-60 in overtime. E-town tied the game with two free throws with 1:35 left in regulation, but missed two shots to win it. John Hardin's Brandon Price led all scorers with 20. Flood and teammate Nic McDonald had 16.

■ Bailey Witte scored 18 points and football star Patrick Towles added 16 to lead Highlands past host Seven Hills 64-43.


■ Maddie Mitchell scored 12 points and pulled down 12 rebounds as Sayre ran off to a 17-7 lead in the first quarter and cruised past host Richmond Model 46-32. The Lady Spartans outshot Model 45 percent to 25 percent, scoring 28 points in the paint.

■ Freshman guard Asia Sims had 24 points and eight steals to lead host Bourbon County past Nicholas County 55-46.

Monticello edged Burgin 43-42 in an All-A Classic game as the Hughes sisters, senior Maleesha and sophomore Mariah, combined for 30 points. Maleesha hit the game-winning free throws with seven seconds left.

Woodford County held visiting Western Hills scoreless in the first quarter and won 47-34.

■ Junior guard Mercedes Cox poured in 32 points and pulled down seven rebounds in a losing effort as No. 1 Marion County (15-2) ripped host Adair County (15-3) 82-59. The winners got 22 points from senior forward Bre Elder.
