High school basketball: Girls' region highlights

Whitley County's girls' basketball team, ranked 20th in Dave Cantrall's Rating the State couldn't overcome a 30-18 halftime deficit and lost 57-55 to North Laurel on Monday in the first round of the 13th Region tournament in Corbin Arena.

North Laurel (9-24) got 17 points from Kayla Bruner, who was 10-for-13 from the free-throw line. Sam Proffitt had 15 points and nine rebounds, and Ashley Woolum scored seven points to go with 13 rebounds and three assists.

North Laurel outrebounded Whitley County 40-28.

Britney Smith led Whitley County (23-7) with 18 points and five rebounds.

Harlan Co. 60, Barbourville 30 (13th): The Lady Bears' defense held Barbourville scoreless in the fourth quarter as they pulled away to an easy victory in Corbin Arena.

Miranda Davenport hit four three-pointers and finished with 20 points and seven rebounds for Harlan County (24-6). Sarah Evans had 13 rebounds and Kaitlyn Stittums had five assists.

Campbell Co. 58, Clark Co. 43 (10th): The Camels outscored the Cardinals by 11 in the second quarter, then pulled away for the win at home. Kaytlin Siegmundt led the way with 18 points, five rebounds and two blocks.

Freshman Sandra Skinner had 20 points and six rebounds for Clark County.

No. 1 Manual 89, Seneca 41 (7th): The Lady Crimsons (31-2) opened on a 28-9 run and cruised to a first-round victory at Bellarmine University.

Kara Wright led a balanced attack with 14 points and seven rebounds. Leasia Wright added 12 points, six steals and four rebounds and Destony Curry scored 11 points.

Sabrina Jackson had 22 points and nine rebounds for the Lady Redhawks (11-16).

No. 14 Sacred Heart 65, Ballard 60 (7th): The Lady Bruins trimmed an 11-point, fourth-quarter deficit to four with 49 seconds left but the Valkyries held on at Bellarmine. DaiJia Ruffin had 15 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots for Sacred Heart (19-12). Jasmin Smith added 11 points, five rebounds, five blocks and three steals.

Daryius Franklin and Alex Martin both scored 17 points for Ballard (22-10).

No. 24 Louisville Christian 52, Male 49 (7th): Brittany Mumford's layup early in the fourth quarter gave the Lady Centurions (21-12) the lead for good at Bellarmine.

China Dow scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, and Tatyianna Taylor had 11 points and nine rebounds for Louisville Christian.

Assumption 58, Presentation 53 (7th): Nora Kiesler scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to help the Rockets hold off the Toppers at Bellarmine.

Assumption pulled ahead for good with 1:53 to play in the third quarter and led by 11 with 54 seconds left in the fourth before Presentation's Aliyah Johnson scored eight points to close the gap.

No. 5 Boone Co. 44, Newport Central Catholic 25 (9th): Sydney Moss scored 13 points to lead the Lady Rebels (28-3) to the win at Northern Kentucky University.

No. 16 Ashland Blazer 81, Raceland 48 (16th): Kaylyn Gambill scored 13 of her 21 points in the first quarter for the Kittens (27-6) at Morehead State University. Julia Heaberlin had 10 points and 10 rebounds for Ashland Blazer.

No. 22 Mercer Co. 49, Southwestern 48 (12th): Catherine Claunch scored 15 points to help the Titans (27-5) edge the Warriors at Lincoln County.

Lincoln Co. 71, Pulaski Co. 52 (12th): Emily Fox scored 20 points and Sydney Harris had 17 points and 11 rebounds in the host Lady Patriots' win.
