Sydney Moss figures the hard work is just beginning. The Boone County star heading to play at Florida expects to begin off-season workouts soon before joining the Gators — and she'll be pushed by her father, NFL wide receiver Randy Moss.
Coach Nell Fookes said she was at dinner with the Mosses discussing her upcoming conditioning program.
"He told her, 'Look, Sydney, you're not going to like me very much this summer,'" Fookes said. "She's been very proud to be her father's daughter. But she hasn't put pressure on herself so it hasn't inhibited her from performing."
Moss headlines a group of players and coaches honored by The Associated Press on Wednesday as the girls' high school player of the year.
Manual's Stacy Pendleton is the girls' coach of the year after leading his school to a state title; Louisville's Trinity swept the boys' awards just as the school did during football season.
Shamrocks forward Nathan Dieudonne earned player of the year honors and Mike Szabo is the coach of the year after the two helped lead Trinity to the boys' Sweet Sixteen state title in March.
"It's just a great feeling, it really is. You have no regrets," Szabo said.
The 5-foot-10 Moss, who averaged more than 22 points and 10 rebounds for the Lady Rebels, said she's ready for the next phase of her career.
"I'm kind of nervous since it's my first year playing college ball," Moss said. "I'm nervous, but I guess I'll fit into it."
Dieudonne will head to Boston University next season.
"Since we were freshmen, all we wanted to do was win state," Dieudonne said. "We were not going to lose. We were all clicking."
