High school basketball: Henry Clay boys prevail on Wilson’s late 3-point play

Felix Wilson made a layup — and the ensuing free throw after being fouled on the play — with two seconds left to give Henry Clay, ranked 16th in the preseason coaches’ poll, a 68-65 win against East Jessamine. Wilson finished with 11 points and five assists for the Blue Devils, who had to rally from an early six-point deficit early in the fourth quarter.

Jordan Houston led Henry Clay with 23 points and 13 rebounds, and Isaiah Tisdale added 15 and 11.

› Taquan Claitt had 13 points, eight rebounds, three assists and four steals in Bryan Station’s 55-52 win against Knox Central in the Weirwille Classic at Berea. Chad Marsee had 16 points, 12 rebounds and three assists for the Panthers.

› No. 11 Scott County got 28 points and six assists from Jamel Banks in an 82-64 win against Warren Central at South Laurel. Isaiah Johnson added 14 points and three blocks.

› Deion Cochran hit a pair of free throws with 24 seconds left that helped give Collins a 67-65 victory against visiting Lexington Christian. Cochran finished with 27 points, including going 7-for-7 at the line. Matt Rose had 32 points and 10 rebounds for the Eagles.

› Letcher County Central sophomore Torell Carter had a career-high 35 points to go with 10 rebounds, four assists and three blocks in a 64-50 win against Pike Central.

› Cobe Penny scored 24 points and Austin Cummins had 18 in Anderson County’s win against Sayre in the Kentucky Bank Classic at Paris. Both Penny and Cummins hit three three-pointers and Cummins also had five assists and four steals.

Jake Duby provided the bulk of the scoring for the Spartans with 28 points. Quinn Pergande had six points and 10 rebounds.

Girls’ highlights:

› University of Kentucky women’s signees Maci Morris and Morgan Rich squared off with Morris’ Bell County squad, ranked 14th in the coaches’ preseason poll, defeating No. 9 Allen County-Scottsville 72-60 at South Warren. Morris scored 33 points and Rich had 24, plus six rebounds and three steals.

› Ashanti Thomas scored 17 points, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked three shots in Lafayette’s 52-44 win against Covington Holy Cross in the Lexus Shootout Classic at Henry Clay. Dee Givens added 15 points and seven rebounds.

› Henry Clay’s T’Laya Lyvers was near triple-double territory with 20 points, 11 rebounds and seven steals in No. 25 Henry Clay’s 52-45 win against visiting Lexington Catholic in the Lexus Shootout Classic. Rachel Blake had 21 points, seven rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks for the Lady Knights.

› Dee Dee Wheeler and Meg Croney-Clark scored 10 points apiece to lead Sayre past Model in Lexington. Ellie Alford led the Lady Spartans in rebounding with 12, followed by Croney-Clark’s 11 and Wheeler’s eight. Mallory Smith had 11 points, six rebounds and three steals for the Lady Patriots.
