Neither of the top two teams in Dave Cantrall’s Rating the State were able to reach the boys’ Sweet Sixteen.
Top-ranked Louisville Trinity lost 67-54 to No. 3 Ballard in the 7th Region semifinals at Valley High School. That followed No. 2 Newport Central Catholic’s loss to Holmes on Friday in the 9th Region tournament.
Ballard’s Jamil Wilson scored 19 points to go with eight assists and five rebounds in the win over the Shamrocks. It was the first time the two teams have played this season.
Williamsburg locked up a spot in the boys’ Sweet Sixteen with a 70-61 victory over Clay County in the 13th Region finals in Corbin. Andrew Griffith’s 21 points, 14 rebounds and six blocked shots were all game highs. The Yellow Jackets’ Fred Massey also had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Cole VonHandorf scored a game-high 24 points to lead No. 8 Covington Catholic past St. Henry in the 9th Region semifinals at the Bank of Kentucky Center in Highland Heights. Andy Flood added 14 points for the Colonels, who trailed by four at halftime. Adam Goetz had 23 points for the Crusaders.
Camron Justice scored 17 points in a little more than a half of action in No. 4 Knott County Central’s 56-27 win over Estill County in the 14th Region semifinals at Powell County. Justice’s career scoring total is up to 3,528.
Austin Chaffins stole the ball off a Sheldon Clark inbound and got the go-ahead layup with 3.7 seconds left to lift Lawrence County over the Cardinals 66-65 in the 15th Region semifinals.
