For most of the night, little ol' Williamsburg led big-city Doss, and it looked like there might be a Sweet Sixteen flashback to 1985 when little ol' Metcalfe County upset big-city Eastern and 7-footer Felton Spencer in Rupp Arena.
But Doss star Terrell Gray didn't let it happen.
Gray hit two clutch three-pointers in the fourth quarter to rally the Dragons to a 56-50 victory in the first round of the 98th Whitaker Bank/KHSAA Sweet Sixteen on Wednesday night in Rupp Arena.
As the final seconds ticked away, Doss Coach Tony Williams' cheeks puffed as he exhaled relief. "I was concerned the time wasn't going off the clock fast enough," he said.
Williamsburg, with an enrollment of just over 200 students, was the smallest school in the tournament, but it took the fight to the big school from Louisville.
The Yellow Jackets jumped to a 13-0 lead to the surprise of everyone, except themselves. "I felt like us as a team were the only ones who thought we could play with them," Williamsburg's Corey Shelton said.
Teammmate Skyler Griffith said it was "awesome" when the Jackets rolled to that early lead. "Just seeing everybody going crazy, it was a great feeling.
"But we knew they were good enough to come back."
Williams said he was "never really rattled" even after his Dragons fell behind 13-0, or when they still trailed going to the fourth quarter.
"I just wanted us to stop making silly mistakes so we could take control."
Gray helped Doss take control. He hit a three-pointer from the left corner to give the Dragons their first lead at 47-45. Dujuante Weaver made it 49-45 with a layup.
Williamsburg wouldn't go away, though.
It was within 51-48 and had a couple chances to get even closer, but it had a turnover and an air-ball three.
That's when Gray struck again, this time nailing a three from the right wing to make it 54-48 with 1:10 left.
Williamsburg Coach Patrick Robinson said when Gray went up for the three, "As a coach you're thinking that's an awful shot. Then when he hits it ... "
Gray, who led the winners with 24 points and five rebounds, said "we needed a bucket to increase our lead.(Weaver) got me the ball and I had to knock it down."
Weaver contributed 13 points, five steals and three assists. His quickness kept the pressure on Williamsburg, especially in the second half.
Doss forced 20 turnovers.
"It's hard to simulate that kind of speed in practice," Robinson said. "It was impossible for us to be 100 percent ready for that."
Robinson pointed to the turnovers as the difference.
Skyler Griffith's 19 points and seven rebounds led Williamsburg. Corey Shelton also had 19 points. Andrew Griffith and Fred Massey each had six points and six rebounds.
"I think fatigue started to set in," Robinson said. "We were making mistakes we don't normally make. (Doss) made it tough on us."
The Jackets managed only five points in the last 10 minutes of the game.
The loss didn't take away from Williamsburg's Cinderella season. It won the 13th Region for the first time since 1946, following up the football team's state runner-up finish in Class A.
