Jenkins star only trails former Highlands star Walz

Whitney Creech scored 60 in Jenkins’ opening-round win of the girls’ Gateway Holiday Classic on Sunday, pushing her into second place for all-time scoring in Kentucky. Creech is now at 4,420 career points, just ahead of McDowell’s Geri Grigsby (4,384). Only Jaime Walz, who played at Highlands, has more with 4,948. The Jenkins senior scored her record-breaking basket on a pull-up jumper in the second half.

The Cavaliers defeated host Montgomery County 70-45, using a decisive 23-8 to take a 33-18 halftime lead. Creech scored 31 of her 60 in the first half. She assisted on four baskets, making her responsible for all but two of her team’s points.

She finished with a double-double after grabbing 22 rebounds. She’s averaging 51.7 points and 18.1 rebounds through 11 games.

A Henry Clay’s T’Laya Lyvers had 27 points, 10 rebounds and eight steals in a 63-46 defeat of Scott in the Gateway Holiday Classic.
