Steve Spurrier’s grandson had a strong debut at quarterback for South Warren on Friday night.

Gavin Spurrier, a junior, made his first varsity start for the Spartans in a 35-14 win over Hopkinsville at home. He went 14 of 30 for 263 yards and two touchdowns with an interception.

Spurrier is the son of Steve Spurrier Jr., who in December was hired as the assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach at Western Kentucky University.

Steve Spurrier won the 1966 Heisman Trophy at the University of Florida, a school he later led to the 1996 national championship as a head coach. Spurrier became the head coach at South Carolina in 2005 and finished his career there, retiring during the 2015 season.

Eliott Pratt of the Bowling Green Daily News interviewed Gavin after the game. You can watch that video here.
