Scott County rumbles past Eastern 52-14 in high school playoffs

Dierrius Dumphord rushed for 84 yards and a touchdown, and quarterback Ben Lawler added 61 yards and two scores on the ground as Scott County rolled at Eastern 52-14 Friday night in the Class 6A quarterfinals.

The Cardinals rushed for five touchdowns in all and 242 yards. They threw for just 76. Next up for Scott County is Boone County, a 21-0 winner Friday over Lafayette.

The Cardinals (12-0) held Eastern to 59 yards rushing. Trey Franklin returned a blocked punt 18 yards in the first quarter to make it 14-0, and J.T. True picked up a fumble in the second and took it back 68 yards for a score, making it 28-7.

Scott County also picked off four of Tanner Evans' passes.

Trinity 42, St. Xavier 6: Dalyn Dawkins ran for 208 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries, and the Shamrocks won their 23rd straight game, in the Class 6A quarterfinals. Playing at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium for the second time this season, the outcome was almost identical. Trinity (11-0) beat the Tigers (8-4) 41-6 on Sept. 30. Trinity next faces Butler (10-2), which beat Henderson County 31-24 Friday night.

Class 2A

Somerset 55, Lexington Christian 14: The host Briar Jumpers rushed for 298 yards and held LCA to 201 total yards to oust the Eagles from the playoffs. Justin King caught a 52-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter to get LCA (6-6) within 13 points, 20-7, but Somerset (8-4) scored the next 28 points.

Class 4A

Highlands 49, Covington Catholic 14: Kentucky commitment Patrick Towles rushed for 106 yards and three touchdowns and passed for another to lead the host Bluebirds in the quarterfinals. Towles finished with 242 passing yards. Highlands (12-0) will face Lexington Catholic next week.

Class 5A

Anderson County 31, Conner 30: Matthew Sprague caught a 7-yard touchdown pass from Seth Carmichael with 44 seconds to go, and Bill Rose's extra point gave the visiting Bearcats a victory in the quarterfinals.
