Horse on the loose hit by truck in Fayette County, is euthanized

A horse was euthanized Monday night after it was hit by a pickup.

Lexington police Sgt. Allen Culver said officers were called at 8:43 p.m. near Iron Works Pike and Russell Cave Road. The horse had gotten loose somehow and ran into the road in the path of the truck, Culver said. The horse's right back leg was severely mangled.

Grooms and a private veterinarian were working with the horse, and the humane society was called. Culver said he didn't know who owned the horse.

The horse was euthanized by a veterinarian at the scene, Lt. Ann Welch said.

The driver of the pickup suffered scrapes and bruises, but the truck was totaled.

Iron Works Pike was closed for a time after the accident.
