NEW YORK — Tizway won't run in the Breeders' Cup Classic at Churchill Downs because of a leg injury that will force him to be retired to stud.
Trainer Jim Bond said Tuesday that Tizway did well in his morning gallop, but his leg later showed signs of swelling and heat. Veterinarians found a bruise, and an ultrasound revealed a suspensory injury in his left front leg.
"The safe thing to do is retire him," Bond said. "The doctors said it was borderline. ... It's sad because I wanted him to have the chance to prove to everyone that he was the best horse in the world."
The Classic was to be Tizway's last race. He had seven wins in 20 career starts and earnings of $1.3 million.
