Breeders' Cup: Sizing up Friday's races

$500,000, 2-year-olds, 6 furlongs

Post time: 4:06 p.m.

Pp Horse Jockey Odds

1 Hightail R. Maragh 8-1

4 South Floyd R. Dominguez 6-1

5 Super Ninety Nine M. Garcia 5-2

6 Hazardous E. Maldonado 8-1

7 Sweet Shirley Mae J. Rosario 4-1

Comment: Sweet Shirley Mae, second in the Grade I Spinaway, is one of two fillies taking on the boys here. Those playing the horses-for-courses angle will like Merit Man, winner of the Tim Conway Stakes at Santa Anita on Oct. 6.

10 Eldaafer R. Santana, Jr. 8-1

11 Commander M. Gutierrez 15-1

12 Worth Repeating M. Pedroza 5-1

13 Sense of Purpose P. Smullen 15-1

14 Juniper Pass L. Dettori 30-1

Comment: Eldaafer, winner of the 2010 Breeders' Cup Marathon, is back for his fourth straight run in the race and was most recently third in the Grade II Hawthorne Gold Cup. Coolmore's Fame and Glory has gone off form in recent months, but the multiple Group I winner can't be overlooked as he was once among the top stayers in Europe.

14 Sustained J. Rosario 12-1

15 Infanta Branca R. Moore 15-1

16 Moulin de Mougin C. Nakatani 15-1

Comment: Since coming over from Europe, Chad Brown-trainee Watsdachances has won both of her North American starts including a victory in the Grade III, 11⁄16-mile Miss Grillo Stakes at Belmont. Unbeaten Spring Venture has been a beast at Woodbine and the 1-mile distance should serve her well.

$2,000,000, 2-year-olds, 1 1 16 miles

Post time: 6:08 p.m.

Pp Horse Jockey Odds

1 Beholder G. Gomez 5-2

2 Executiveprivilege R. Bejarano 2-1

3 Spring in the Air P. Husbands 15-1

4 Renee's Queen C. Nakatani 30-1

5 Dreaming of Julia J. Velazquez 5-2

6 Almost An Angel J. Rosario 30-1

7 Broken Spell R. Maragh 20-1

8 Kauai Katie R. Napravnik 3-1

Comment: Grade I winner Executiveprivilege has the home-track advantage, not to mention a 5-for-5 record, but Kauai Katie has displayed brilliance that could overtake them all. The stablemate of fellow race entrant and Grade I winner Dreaming of Julia has won her three starts by a combined 221/4 lengths.

$2,000,000, 3-year-olds and up, 1 1 4 miles

Post time: 6:48 p.m.

Pp Horse Jockey Odds

1 Star Billing V. Espinoza 30-1

2 Zagora J. Castellano 8-1

3 Stormy Lucy M. Pedroza 30-1

4 The Fugue W. Buick 7-2

5 x-Nereid J. Leparoux 15-1

6 Lady of Shamrock M. Smith 12-1

7 Up R. Moore 12-1

8 Nahrain L. Dettori 6-1

9 Marketing Mix G. Gomez 9-2

10 Ridasiyna C. Lanerie 4-1

11 I'm a Dreamer R. Hughes 8-1

12 In LingerieJ. Velazquez 12-1

Comment: No horse domestically has taken this division by storm, but the Tom Proctor-trained Marketing Mix scored her first Grade I win over the Santa Anita course in September when she won the Rodeo Drive Stakes. European contenders always command respect on the grass and this year's prime threat is the John Gosden-trained The Fugue, winner of the Group I Nassau Stakes in August.

$2,000,000, 3-year-olds and up, 1 1 8 miles

Post time: 7:30 p.m.

Pp Horse Jockey Odds

1 Grace Hall J. Castellano 10-1

2 My Miss Aurelia C. Nakatani 4-1

3 Class Included R. Baze 30-1

4 Questing I. Ortiz, Jr. 4-1

5 Awesome Feather J. Sanchez 3-1

6 Royal Delta M. Smith 9-5

7 Include Me Out J. Talamo 15-1

8 Love and Pride J. Velazquez 8-1

Comment: Maybe one of the best assemblages of distaffers for this race in its history. The last two juvenile filly champions, My Miss Aurelia (2011) and Awesome Feather (2010), are each putting their career unbeaten streaks on the line against fellow champion and defending race winner Royal Delta, multiple Grade I winner Questing, and Todd Pletcher-trainee Love and Pride, who already owns a Grade I win over the Santa Anita track. Good luck finding one to toss out of this group.
