■ Hootenanny, winner of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf at Santa Anita Park last Oct. 31, took care of business in stylish fashion in his season debut Saturday. The 3-year-old son of Quality Road sat just off the early pace before drawing clear in the stretch to win the 51/2-furlong turf test by 61/4 lengths.
■ Samantha Nicole, a full sister to 2009 Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra, broke her maiden in her fourth try when she won the opening race on Saturday's card going 11⁄8 miles on the main track. Owned by Stonestreet Stables, 4-year-old Samantha Nicole is by Medaglia d'Oro and out of Lotta Kim. She is trained by Kiaran McLaughlin.
