Among the horses to exercise at Churchill Wednesday morning was Optimizer, trained by D. Wayne Lukas. The horse joined the Derby field of hopefuls Tuesday after another horse was withdrawn. The horse is the first Derby starter for Lukas since 2010. Lukas last won the Derby in 1999 with Charismatic, one of four Lukas trainees to take the roses.
