RiverDog to watch: C Jesus Montero (6-foot-4, 225 pounds, from Guacaro, Venezuela) signed a free-agent contract with the Yankees in 2006, when he was 16, worth $2 million. Baseball America rates him as the best catching prospect in the Yankees organization and sixth-best prospect overall. It also labels him the ”best power hitter“ in the farm system. Now 18, Montero is hitting .297 with seven homers, 50 RBI and 49 runs.

Legend to watch: CF Steve Brown (6-1, 196, from Barranquilla, Colombia) earned team Defensive Player of the Month honors for June, finishing the month with a .978 fielding percentage, 128 putouts and three assists in 134 total chances this season. At the plate, Brown is hitting .225 with eight homers, 23 RBI and 31 runs. Nineteen of his 49 hits have been for extra bases. Hitting .214 at the All-Star break, he is batting .267 since then.
