Catfish to watch: Sunday starter Alex Cobb (6-foot-1, 180 pounds, from Vero Beach, Fla.) is among the league leaders in ERA (2.62) and innings pitched (103). A 2006 fourth-round draft pick, Cobb signed at age 18 for $400,000 rather than pursue college. He also drew college interest as a quarterback. Rated by Baseball America as the Rays' 14th-best prospect, he supplements a top-notch curve with a fastball and a splitter/change-up. Over 18 games, all starts, he has 69 strikeouts to 24 walks.
Legend to watch: The numbers on RHP Mike Koons (6-2, 205, from Castle Rock, Colo.) don't tell the whole story. He is 0-4 with a 5.68 ERA. However, Koons has held opponents to two earned runs over his last seven relief appearances (102⁄3 innings). Overall, he has 42 strikeouts to 13 walks over 441⁄3 innings. Koons pitched for Arizona before transferring to San Diego State. The Astros signed him as a non-drafted free agent a year ago last Thursday.
