Hot Rod to watch: SS Tim Beckham (6-foot, 190 pounds, from Griffin, Ga.), the No. 1 overall pick in the 2008 draft, signed out of high school for $6.15 million. Playing alongside brother Jeremy, a 17th-round pick, Tim Beckham hit .320 (16-for-50) with a homer and eight RBI in his first 13 games with the Hot Rods. He reached safely in all 13 games, with hits in 11 games. Baseball America rates Beckham as the No. 2 prospect in the Rays organization, behind only 2007 No. 1 pick David Price.
Legend to watch: RHP Daniel Meszaros (6-foot, 170, from Boca Raton, Fla.) leads the league in saves — 6-for-6 through Thursday — and shares the league lead in appearances (7) and ERA (0.00). He has worked 51⁄3 innings, striking out 11, walking one and holding opponents to a .105 batting average. The Astros selected him in the 48th round of last June's draft. Kentucky fans may recall that it was Meszaros, then a freshman, who got the start against UK in the College of Charleston's 2006 NCAA (Lexington) Regional finals victory.
