Cruz and Altuve team up for a Lexington victory

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Strong pitching by Luis Cruz and a three-run homer by Jose Altuve helped the Lexington Legends record a 4-3 win over the West Virginia Power on Friday night.

Cruz pitched six innings and allowed three hits and one run while walking two and striking out six.

West Virginia scored without a hit in the first inning when Evan Chambers walked, stole second and came around to score on two infield outs.

The Legends were held hitless until the fifth inning by Kyle McPherson, who had beaten Lexington twice earlier this season. Jiovanni Mier led off the fifth with a single, and after Rene Garcia flied out, Grant Hogue beat out a bunt, putting runners at first and second. Altuve followed with his ninth home run of the year over the wall in left field, giving Lexington a 3-1 lead.

Lexington's Jake Goebbert made it 4-1 in the sixth with a solo homer, his fourth home run of the season.

The Power rallied with two runs in the eighth on an Aaron Baker single.

West Virginia threatened in the ninth against Lexington closer Kirk Clark, who struck out Chambers to end the game with runners on first and third.
