Lexington wins but loses best hitter to Double-A

Grant Hogue found the perfect way to offset his 0-for-3 night at the plate Thursday.

Sprinting in from center field, Hogue laid out to make a diving grab of Jared Prince's dying quail of a fly ball, the final out in the Lexington Legends' 3-2 victory over the Hickory Crawdads.

Hogue's catch also was a fitting send-off for J.D. Martinez, who after the game was promoted from the Legends to Double-A Corpus Christi. Martinez went 2-for-3 and scored a run Thursday, raising his league-leading batting average to .362. He also leaves behind league-leading totals in runs, hits and six other offensive categories.

Stranded at second by Hogue's heroics was Jared Bolden, who moments earlier came up with a two-out, two-strike, two-run, pinch-hit double to left-center.

"I really thought I could have got to the double they got," Hogue said. "I kind of took a bad route on that, so I was hoping that (Prince) would hit it anywhere close to me. I was fortunate to get a good jump and I came up with the catch."

Right-handers Jose Cisnero, Brenden Stines and Arcenio Leon shut out the Crawdads for 82⁄3 innings.

Cisnero (4-5) threw six shutout innings, yielding two singles and three walks while striking out eight.

He escaped jams in the first, third and fifth innings, with Hickory putting two runners on in each inning.

Cisnero said he went to his fastball with runners on base, letting his defense make plays. At other times, his change-up was the equalizer.

"In the beginning of the season, I didn't throw (the change) too much because it wasn't working," Cisnero said. "But now I think I'm doing really good with that pitch."

The Legends scored runs in the fourth, seventh and eighth innings.

Martinez scored the first on Jonathan Meyer's single, challenging Cristian Santana after the left fielder had thrown out Renzo Tello at the plate earlier in the inning.

Tello reached on an eighth-inning fielder's choice to drive in Rene Garcia with the second run.

The final run came when Jake Goebbert scored on Jiovanni Mier's two-out single.
