Edwar Cabrera cooled off the smoking hot Lexington Legends bats and the Asheville Tourists beat the Legends 4-1 Monday night in Asheville, N.C., to earn a split of their four-game South Atlantic League series.
The Legends had pounded out 33 hits in 13-7 and 18-9 victories Saturday and Sunday, but Cabrera (2-1) shut them down. After the left-hander got out of a bases-loaded jam in the first, he retired 18 straight batters before Jhonny Medrano singled to lead off the eighth.
The game was scoreless until the fifth, when the Tourists broke through against Legends starter Mike Foltynewicz (0-3). Tyler Massey led off with a double, and one out later he scored on a double by Brett Tanos.
Asheville scored twice in the bottom of the sixth when Massey delivered a two-out, two-run single to left.
The Legends didn't score until the eighth when Medrano singled, stole second, went to third on a throwing error by the catcher, Dustin Garneau, and came home on a groundout by Roberto Pena.
Asheville added a run in the bottom of the eighth on a two-out double by Massey.
