Lexington Legends

All signs good for Pence

The Lexington Legends are a proud affiliate of the American League champion Kansas City Royals, and Legends staffers, along with most fans in Lexington, are looking forward to rooting for the Royals in their first World Series appearance since 1985.   Royals’ outfielder Terrance Gore, who stole 68 bases for the Legends in 2013, is expected to have an impact as a pinch-runner.

But before the competition begins, the Legends offer a tip of the cap to Giants outfielder Hunter Pence.

Pence was seen as a can’t-miss prospect when he was with the Legends in 2005.  In 80 games with Lexington, Pence hit 25 home runs, drove in 60 runs and batted .338.  Two years later, he was in the big leagues to stay.

He made his major league debut with Houston in 2007, was named to the National League All-Star team in 2009, 2011 and 2014 and was previously in the World Series in 2012, when the Giants swept the Detroit Tigers.  He was named to the Legends’ Hall of Fame in 2009.

In 2014, he was third in the National League in hits with 180, and he owns the major leagues’ longest active streak of consecutive games played with 383.

In addition, he has become the unofficial “voice” of the Giants – delivering off-the-cuff inspirational talks to teammates and fans.

And with Pence in the World Series, watch for the signs.  Not the signs from the catcher or the third base coach – watch for the Hunter Pence signs in the stands, a trend started by New York Mets fans as a relatively good-natured means of heckling a visiting player.   Some examples:   “Hunter Pence can’t parallel park,” “Hunter Pence hates bacon,” and “Hunter Pence brings 13 items to the express lane.”  Giants fans came to his defense with “Hunter Pence never confuses ‘you’re’ with ‘your,’” and “Hunter Pence always makes his bed.”

                 Enjoy the Series.
