Gerald Henderson scored 19 points and the Charlotte Bobcats held off a late rally to beat the visiting Washington Wizards 100-88 in the teams' pre-season opener Sunday.

Byron Mullens added 18 points, including a key three-pointer down the stretch, and Ben Gordon had 16 for the Bobcats, who closed out the lockout-shortened 2011-12 season with a 23-game losing streak on the way to a league-worst 7-59 record.

Charlotte, which led 56-42 at the half, also got 14 points from Ramon Sessions and 12 from first-round draft pick and former University of Kentucky star Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.

Bradley Beal and Martell Webster scored 18 points each and Kevin Seraphin had 11 for the Wizards, who played without starters John Wall (patella), Nene (foot) and Emeka Okafor (soreness).

Kidd-Gilchrist had a versatile game — he added six rebounds and three steals — that was highlighted by a spectacular strip of Wizards forward Trevor Ariza.

He reached around Ariza's body, punched the ball up through Ariza's arms and caught it in mid-stride, going undeterred to the other end for a dunk.

"With Michael, our biggest job is to stay out of his way'' coaching-wise, Bobcats Coach Mike Dunlap told the Charlotte Observer. "He's so instinctive. If you give him a thousand plays'' you hinder that.

Ayon will be the third Mexican-born player to play in the NBA following Eduardo Najera and Horacio Llamas.

Chris Bosh finished with 22 points, and LeBron James had 10 for the defending NBA champion Heat, who played without Dwyane Wade as the star guard recovers from surgery on his left knee.

Ray Allen, making his Miami debut, had 10 points and five assists. James added six rebounds and six assists. Josh Harrellson (UK) had three points and played 11 minutes.

Celtics 105, Emporio Armani Milano 75: Rajon Rondo (UK) scored all 17 of his points in the first quarter and added six assists to lead the Boston Celtics to a pre-season win in Milan, Italy. Courtney Lee (WKU) had 11 points for Boston.
