Former Tates Creek High School and University of Louisville place-kicker David Akers is feeling like his old self again after two off-season surgeries. Akers booted a 63-yard field goal in Detroit's training camp on Monday, as he tries to extend his career with the Lions.

Akers, who kicked an NFL-record-tying 63-yarder for San Francisco early last season, was released by the NFC champion 49ers during the off-season.

The Detroit Free Press caught up with Akers on Monday and talked with him about his battle for a starting job.
