Jennifer Smith, who covers University of Kentucky football and women’s basketball for the Lexington Herald-Leader and Kentucky.com, was named 2017 Kentucky Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sports Media Association this week.
For the second year in a row, the award went to Smith, and for the third consecutive year to a writer from the Herald-Leader. Columnist Mark Story won the 2015 award. The Herald-Leader’s John Clay and Jerry Tipton won the award in previous years.
The National Sports Media Association names a sportswriter and sportscaster of the year in every state. This year’s Kentucky Sportscaster of the Year was Tom Lane from WDRB-TV in Louisville.
Also this week, the NSMA announced four inductees to its hall of fame — Thomas Boswell, Woody Durham, Bryant Gumbel and Dick Weiss.
Kevin Harlan was voted 2017 National Sportscaster of the Year and Adrian Wojnarowski was named 2017 National Sportswriter of the Year.
All award winners will be honored during the 59th annual NSMA Awards Weekend, June 23-25 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
