The local youth program lost one of its rising stars with the death of Owyn Spahr on Feb. 26. Spahr, 15, was a sophomore at Paul Laurence Dunbar, a member of the bowling team and a junior bowler at Collins Bowling Centers-Southland.
Spahr, who bowled a 299 game on Feb. 18 at Southland, came to Lexington from Sturgis, Mich., four years ago.
When he started bowling at Southland he was averaging about 170. Kenny Hohensee, a youth coach at Southland who worked with Spahr and later became his coach at Dunbar, said Spahr's average in the Saturday youth league rose to 203 and his average for Dunbar was 204.
"He was very talented and had a great attitude, was always positive and very coachable," Hohensee said. "He was loved by his team."
