Gilbert rolls second perfect game of year

Jonathan Gilbert rolled his second 300 game of the season on June 10 in the summer adult/child league at Collins Bowling Centers-Southland.

Gilbert put together games of 203-300-235 for a 738 series. He had rolled a 300 on March 9 in the Saturday morning youth league at Eastland.

The perfect game is the 51st by a local bowler this season.

■ The USBC Open Championships will wrap up in Reno at the National Bowling Stadium next month. However, a bowler from New Mexico had a night he won't soon forget.

Eric Espinda of Albuquerque rolled the highest triplicate score in the 110-year history of the Open on June 5. Espinda rolled a 279 triplicate in the team event for an 837 series. The 837 series featured 30 strikes and was only the second in this year's USBC Open, which began in March and runs into July.

Espinda topped the record held by Kevin Shafer of Eaton, Ind and Gary Exner, Jr. of Racine, Wis., who rolled 248 triplicates.
