If there was any doubt about it, Xavier Brown is still the Fastest Kid in Town.

Xavier, 12, won the annual downtown Lexington race for the second year in a row on Saturday night.

Ayanna Darrington, 10, a fifth-grader at William Wells Brown Elementary, won Fastest Girl in Town.

Xavier, who wore a T-shirt proclaiming him “faster than fast,” is a seventh-grader at Carter G. Woodson Academy. He said he also plays football and basketball, which helps keep him in shape.

And his father, Lamont Brown, gives Xavier and his two younger brothers, Evan, 10, and Jordan, 4, special help through his youth-focused athletic training business, Purpose Training.

“It’s more the mechanics behind it,” Lamont Brown said.

Other runners said they got an edge from different methods.

Four-year-old Jasmine Knox said her exercise regimen included pushing people on the swing.

Her 3-year-old brother, Anthony Knox, 3, pointed to his sneakers when asked what helped him run fast.

And Wyatt Roser, 3, followed his grandfather’s advice to run like a dinosaur was chasing him.

The Fastest Kid in Town is part of A Midsummer Night’s Run, which is organized by Baptist Health Lexington and also includes a 1-mile run and a 5K.

“It’s a Lexington tradition,” said Laura Crawford, whose daughters Caroline and Ellie were among about 350 children participating in the Fastest Kid races. She and her husband, Pete Crawford, planned to run the 5K, each pushing a girl in a baby jogger.

“This is a great thing,” Pete Crawford said. “We run it every year.”

This year’s weather was pleasant, with a nice breeze keeping the estimated 4,000 runners in all three events cool — or at least as cool as an athlete can be when out for a midsummer night’s run.

The winner of the 1-mile fun run was Turlough McEntee, 13, of Paris, who finished in 7:05. The female 1-mile winner was Emily Krintz, 12, of Wilmore, whose time was 7:27.

Joseph Mullen, 25, of Berea, won the 5K, finishing in 15:18. The female 5K winner was Michaela Reinhart, 16, of Georgetown, whose time was 18:26.
