The 2017 Lexington Herald-Leader Kentucky Sports Figure of the Year Award will be presented to one of 10 finalists Wednesday night.
The winner — selected via a statewide vote of Kentucky media members — will be revealed simultaneously on Kentucky.com and at the Bluegrass Sports Awards Banquet at the Lexington Convention Center.
No one has won the Kentucky Sports Figure of the Year Award in back-to-back years since iconic Eastern Kentucky University football coach Roy Kidd won the first two years the award was given in 1981 and ’82.
The other nine finalists, in alphabetical order, are: Purdue University football coach and Louisville native Jeff Brohm; Louisville Cardinals swimmer Mallory Comerford; former Kentucky Wildcats women’s basketball guard Makayla Epps; ex-Paul Laurence Dunbar High School boys’ hoops guard Taveion Hollingsworth; former Kentucky Wildcats quarterback Stephen Johnson; ex-U of L baseball pitcher/first baseman Brendan McKay; UK baseball coach Nick Mingione; Kentucky running back Benny Snell; and PGA Tour golfer Justin Thomas, a St. Xavier High School graduate.
Full coverage of the 37th Kentucky Sports Figure of the Year will be on Kentucky.com Wednesday night and in Thursday’s Herald-Leader.
