Harlan’s Jordan Smith — the latest winner of The Voice on NBC — will sing the national anthem at Saturday’s University of Kentucky men’s basketball game in Rupp Arena.
Smith posted Tuesday on his Facebook page, “I have always been a huge Cats fan, so singing at this game is another dream come true.”
The Cats will play the Old Miss Rebels at 7 p.m.
After winning the television singing competition, Smith, a senior at Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn., was celebrated with a parade in his hometown on Dec. 21. He was named Harlan Countian of the Year, and at a ceremony following the parade, Smith was given the key to the city, named a Kentucky Colonel and an honorary Harlan County coal miner.
With his win on The Voice, Smith got a recording contract with Republic Records. Jordan Smith: The Complete Season 9 Collection is available on iTunes, and on CD at Wal-Mart.
A news release from Republic said that during Smith’s run on The Voice, more than 1 million Smith singles were sold and there were more than 57 million cumulative streams of his performances on YouTube, making Smith the top-selling artist to ever emerge from The Voice. Smith is expected to begin work on an album for Republic in 2016.
His Facebook post on Tuesday included other news from the singer: “I will be singing the National Anthem at the NHL Winter Classic in Boston, Ma., this Friday! The game will be televised on NBC starting at 1pm EST. This is a huge opportunity and will be tons of fun, so be sure to tune in!”
For those of you who can’t be at the game, the pregame activities Saturday from Rupp Arena, including Smith’s singing of the national anthem, will be available on the UK gameday app, which can be downloaded at bit.ly/1QAOtDz
